Multi-Institutional Research Projects

Plant Genome Initiative (P.G.I.R)
This project is part of the The National Plant Genome Initiative that was launched in 1998. The objective is to explore DNA structure and function in plants so that useful properties of plants can be understood, improved, and ultimately harnessed to address national needs, including agriculture, nutrition, energy and waste reduction.

Facilities

Fermentation Plant
Completely renovated in 1989, the fermentation facility, which meets BL2-LS containment requirements, is housed in four contiguous areas:
  • Production
  • Computer Control
  • An explosion-proof recovery room
  • Chemical laboratory
A wide range of services are offered by the fermentation facility and support labs throughout the University. In lieu of present regulatory concerns, facility equipment has been certified to NIST standards and the facility operates under requirements for cGMP production of preclinical bulk biologicals.
